Men’s Tungsten Wedding Bands: Your Questions Answered

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When it comes to selecting a wedding band, men today have more options than ever. If tungsten is a metal that’s on your mind, continue reading to learn why it’s winning over modern grooms.

What Is Tungsten?

Tungsten, or tungsten carbide when used in jewelry, is a dense metal alloy formed by combining tungsten and carbon atoms under extreme heat and pressure, resulting in an ultra-hard material. Tungsten color is naturally a gunmetal gray. However, it’s available in various finishes, including black, silver and white. Some bands incorporate carbon fiber inlays, PVD coating (like the band pictured below) or even diamond embellishments.

Unlike gold, which can bend over time, tungsten is incredibly strong and retains its shape under pressure. While tungsten is incredibly durable, it’s not indestructible. Due to its hardness, tungsten can be brittle, meaning it may crack under extreme impact. However, this is a rare occurrence in everyday wear. If you’re concerned about potential breakage from an active lifestyle or the demands of a job, you may want to remove your ring or explore more flexible alternatives.

Can Tungsten Rings Be Resized?

Tungsten bands cannot be resized. If your ring size changes, you’ll need to replace the band instead of resizing it

Can Tungsten Rings Be Cut Off?

There’s a common misconception that tungsten rings can’t be broken off in a medical emergency, but this is false. Jewelers have specialized tools designed to safely cut through the ring without harming the skin, so you can rest easy knowing that emergency removal is entirely possible.

Is Tungsten Expensive?

Compared to precious metals like gold and platinum, tungsten is a highly affordable option. It provides a premium, weighty feel at a more accessible price point. Many tungsten bands are less than $500, while gold rings can be upwards of $1,000 or more.

Does Tungsten Tarnish?

Tungsten doesn’t tarnish or corrode. Unlike sterling silver or certain gold alloys, it maintains its color and shine over time without the need for frequent polishing.

How to Clean Tungsten Wedding Bands

If you wish to clean your tungsten wedding bandthe process is simple. Use mild soap and warm water with a soft cloth to remove dirt and oils. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, as these may damage certain plated finishes. We recommend bringing your ring in for professional cleaning and inspection every six months.

Is Tungsten Hypoallergenic?

Tungsten itself is hypoallergenic. However, some tungsten rings contain nickel as a binding agent, which can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. If you have a nickel allergy, it’s important to ask a sales representative about the materials mixed with the tungsten before making a purchase.

Tantalum vs Tungsten

Tungsten carbide is harder and offers a superior heat and scratch resistance compared to tantalum. However, it’s also more brittle and not shatter-proof. Tantalum, on the other hand, is softer but far more flexible, making it less likely to break under pressure. Both metals surpass gold or platinum in terms of hardness and scratch resistance, while also being more affordable. Aesthetically, tungsten features a lighter gray hue with whitish undertones and a lustrous finish, while tantalum has a darker appearance with bluish tints and a reflective metal sheen. Due to its rarity, tantalum is typically more expensive, with tungsten rings often costing $200 to $300 less than their tantalum counterparts.
